Origin and history
The church Saint-Bonnet, located in Saint-Bonnet-le-Chastel in Puy-de-Dôme, is a religious building built in the late 15th century or early 16th century. It illustrates the late flamboyant gothic style, with a nave of three arched bays, side chapels and a polygonal apse choir. Its south gate, adorned with an ancient statuette on a carved console, and its openwork tympanum with an oculus between two truffled bays, bear witness to remarkable architectural know-how. The bell tower, from the modern era, contrasts with the rest of the structure by its geminied bays and slender arrow.
The church was registered as historical monuments by order of 12 April 1954, thus recognizing its heritage value. Inside, a beam of glory supporting a statue of Christ on the cross, as well as a quest dish, are listed in the Palissy base, highlighting the richness of its liturgical furniture. The vaults of the spans, adorned with carved keys, and the double arches connecting the nave to the lateral chapels, reveal particular attention to the decoration and structure.
The broken arch gate, with its three windows and its lintel decorated with a polygonal console carved from flamboyant archatures, is a flagship element of the building. The ancient statuette that overcomes it, although unidentified, adds a mystical dimension to the whole. The modern bell tower, openwork and crowned with an arrow, was added later, marking a stylistic evolution while respecting the general harmony of the church.
Open daily from 8am to 6.30pm, the church remains an active place of worship and a heritage accessible to the public. Its location in the village of Saint-Bonnet-le-Chastel, in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, makes it a point of major interest for lovers of religious architecture and local history. Available sources, such as Wikipedia and Monumentum, confirm its importance in the cultural landscape of Puy-de-Dôme.
