Origin and history
The church of Saint-Brice de Grisy is a Catholic building located in the village of Grisy, a commune associated with Vendeuvre (Calvados) since 1972. Its history dates back to the 12th century, marked by the construction of the western gate, symbol of its Romanesque origin. The choir, rebuilt in the 13th century, adopts an early Gothic style, while the vault of the choir, the north gate (dated 1484), and the present tower date from the 15th century. The tower was strengthened in the 17th century for defensive reasons, and a Western porch, now extinct, still existed before 1850.
The church once depended on the ancient diocese of Sées. It was listed in the Historical Monuments by order of 19 September 1928, recognizing its heritage value. Its furniture and architecture reflect Norman stylistic evolutions, between Romanesque and Gothic influences. The north gate, engraved from the date of 1484, bears witness to late additions before the fortification of the tower.
Today owned by the commune of Vendeuvre, the Saint-Brice church remains a characteristic example of Normandy's rural religious heritage. Its registration in the General Inventory of Cultural Heritage (reference IA00000377) and its Mérimée sheet document its history and protections. Sources, such as the works of Arcisse de Caumont (Statistique monumentale du Calvados, 1850), underline its role in local history since the Middle Ages.
