Origin and history

The church of Saint-Christophe de Couddes, located in the department of Loir-et-Cher, is a religious building whose origins date back to at least the eleventh century. The walls of the nave preserve remains of a small apparatus dating from this period, while subsequent modifications, such as the reduction of the western gate in the 12th century, testify to a progressive architectural evolution. The building was enriched in the 16th century with the construction of the choir and a seigneurial chapel, illustrating its importance in local life.

The foundation of the parish could be linked to the installation of hermits sent by the abbey of Saint-Martin-de-Tours between the 5th and 6th centuries, although this hypothesis is not confirmed by direct sources. Inside, the church houses exceptional murals, of which the oldest (late 12th century) represents St.Christophus in front of King Dannus. A second pictorial campaign, dated from the fourteenth century, depicts the Last Judgment and a scene with a knight, while a monumental fresco of St.Christophus (15th century) dominates space. These works, partially covered in the 19th century by a trompe-l'oeil decoration, highlight the artistic richness of the monument.

Classified as historical monuments in 1994, the church now belongs to the town of Couddes. Its classification covers the entire building (Cadastre D 809), protecting both architectural and pictorial heritage.
