Origin and history
Saint-Christophe de Lanches Church is a parish church located in the village of Lanches, on the territory of the municipality of Lanches-Saint-Hilaire, west of the Somme department, northeast of Abbeville. Built in the 18th century, it is distinguished by its small size and stone architecture, with a choir raised from the nave. The quadrangular bell tower, topped by an arrow in slate, dominates the building, while the south wall features a carved stone representing the inverted weapons of Charles III de Créquy.
The interior of the church houses several works classified as historical monuments as objects. Among them, a statuette of Saint Catherine of Alexandria painted wood of the 15th century, as well as statues of beam of glory and a representation of Saint Christophe dating from 1567. The furniture also includes 17th-century octagonal baptismal fonts, a pulpit to preach from the early 18th century, and a rock high altar in painted and gilded wood. An 18th-century stained glass window illustrates the crucifixion, adding to the artistic richness of the place.
The church, though modest, reflects the religious and architectural history of Picardia. Its varied and partly medieval heritage bears witness to the evolution of artistic and liturgical practices in this rural region. The preserved elements, such as statues and stained glass windows, offer an overview of local traditions and popular devotion throughout the centuries.
