Origin and history

The church of Saint-Christophe de Lasbordes, located in the Aude department in the Occitanie region, is a religious building whose origins date back to at least the eleventh century. The first written mention dates from 1496, when the cure was attached to the episcopal manse of Saint-Papoul, but its construction was earlier. The building has a unique nave of four spans, covered with false arches of warheads, and side chapels added in the 15th and 17th centuries. The current bell tower, built at the end of the 19th century, replaces an old 11th century bell tower, probably linked to the dungeon of a medieval castle.

The church choir houses a remarkable 15th century painted decoration, organized into four horizontal registers. These paintings depict draperies, saints under trilobed arches, and scenes of Christ's life. Polls revealed fragments of decorations painted on the side walls of the choir. The church was listed as a historic monument in 1988, and its murals were classified in 1993, highlighting their heritage value.

The sacristy, built in 1514, shares the same architectural characteristics as the lateral chapels, with vaults on cross-walls. The less ancient southern chapels contrast with the older and Gothic-style northern chapels. The building, owned by the commune, illustrates the architectural and artistic evolution of the region over nearly nine centuries, mixing Romanesque, Gothic and modern elements.
