Origin and history
The church of Saint Christophe de Saint-Christophe-en-Champagne, built in the 12th century, is an example of Romanesque architecture in the shape of a Latin cross. It was initially a dependence of the Benedictine Abbey of the Pre-Le Mans, which shows its religious and historical importance in the region. Its vault, laminated and painted in the late 15th or early 16th century, as well as its furniture and west gate, date from this period of enrichment.
Classified as a historical monument since 15 December 1997, the church has enjoyed a complete restoration between 2010 and 2016, covering both interior and exterior elements. This ranking and recent work underscores its heritage value and the commitment of local authorities to its preservation. The painted vault, characteristic of the transition between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, is a remarkable element of its artistic heritage.
The building, owned by the commune, is located at the address 3 Rue de la Clochetterie, in the department of Sarthe. Its history is closely linked to that of the Abbey of the Pre, on which it depended, and reflects the influence of religious communities in the territorial and spiritual organization of the region in the twelfth and sixteenth centuries.
