Origin and history

The Saint-Cibard de Coutures Church is a Catholic religious building located in the Gironde department in New Aquitaine. Built in the 12th century, it is located in the heart of the village of Coutures, about 250 metres south of the D15 departmental road. Its architecture and location reflect the importance of rural churches in the medieval organization of territories.

The church was listed as historic monuments by decree of 21 December 1925, thus recognizing its heritage value. Today it belongs to the commune of Coutures and is referenced in the Merimée database under the code Insee 33139. Although little documented about its architectural specificities, it is part of the landscape of the Romanesque churches of the region.

Rural churches like Saint-Cibard played a central role in community life in the Middle Ages. They served not only as a place of worship, but also as a gathering point for the inhabitants, marking the rhythm of the seasons and religious holidays. Their construction in the 12th century coincided with a period of parish development and land structure under the influence of the Church and local lords.
