Origin and history

The Saint-Clair d'Hérouville-Saint-Clair church, located in Calvados in Normandy, is a 11th and 12th century religious building. It is dedicated to Clair du Beauvaisis, hermit of the 9th century Norman Bocage, and features a Romanesque architecture marked by a nave and choir partially built in the 12th century. The bedside, redone in the thirteenth century, and the chapels of the transept date from the transition between the twelfth and thirteenth centuries.

The building suffered damage during the Wars of Religion in the 16th century, notably by the Huguenot armies. During the French Revolution, the nearby Saint-Pierre church was destroyed, while the right bedside of Saint-Clair was replaced by a cut-up bedside in the 1880s. The first span of the choir was listed as historical monuments in 1928, and a medieval gissant was opened there in 1934.

The architecture of the church, in the shape of a Latin cross, includes a bell tower with a 15th or 16th century balustrade, as well as a Romanesque door decorated with geometric motifs and fantastic animals. The nave and chorus contain carved modillons, some of which represent faces or symbols, and two Romanesque columns remain in the choir. The furniture includes a 14th century gissant, an altar of the 16th or 17th century, and modern baptismal fonts replacing those destroyed during the Battle of Normandy.

Historical sources, such as the works of Arcisse de Caumont and the Heritage of the municipalities of Calvados, highlight the architectural and artistic richness of the building. The church remains a testimony to the stylistic evolutions and historical upheavals of Normandy, from the Romanesque period to the modern period.
