Origin and history

Saint-Clair d'Hérouville-en-Vexin Church is a Catholic building built from the twelfth to the sixteenth century. Although its exterior appearance seems homogeneous and dated from the 15th century, its interior reveals older elements, including an almost Romanesque choir and a primitive Gothic nave. This mix of eras illustrates the economic constraints and partial reconstructions typical of Vexin's rural churches after the Hundred Years' War.

The first church, built in the 12th century, was partially destroyed by the English in 1435, including its bell tower used as a watchtower. Thanks to a donation from Jeanne de Laval in 1443, a reconstruction campaign was launched, completed around 1468. However, elements such as the vault of the base of the bell tower were not completed until the 16th century, and architectural compromises were needed due to limited resources.

The bell tower, often considered the oldest of the flamboyant style in the Vexin, is an approximate reconstruction of the destroyed Romanesque bell tower. It hardly reflects the characteristics of its time, probably due to the absence of recent models and the employment of local artisans. Outside, the western gate, redone in the 1940s, served as a model for other churches of the Vexin, while the ancient gate of the baptismal chapel, now blocked, is a masterpiece of the flamboyant Gothic.

The choir, little modified since the 12th century, preserves Romanesque elements such as an apse arched in warheads and stylized leaf capitals. Lateral chapels, added or remodelled in the 15th and 16th centuries, show flamboyant and renaissant Gothic influences. The seigneurial chapel in the north, dedicated to Saint Clair, was restored in the 19th century thanks to Josephine Brochard, a resident of Hérouville.

The church houses remarkable furniture, including a 15th century statue of Saint Clair and a 16th century carved group representing the Education of the Virgin. Ranked a historic monument in 1915, it reflects the architectural evolutions and historical vicissitudes of the region, while remaining a place of worship and local memory.

Archaeological excavations in 2003 revealed the foundations of a pre-Roman church, confirming that successive buildings have always occupied the same site. Despite the restorations and subsequent additions, Saint Clair Church remains an emblematic example of adapting rural communities to the challenges of their time.
