Origin and history
The Saint-Claud church of Saint-Claud, classified as a Historical Monument, dates from the 14th and 15th centuries. It is distinguished by its medieval crypt, accessible by two side stairs surrounding the choir. This crypt, covered with a low arch vault, houses a central pillar supporting the structure, while its ground is paved. Its architecture reflects the religious construction techniques of the time.
The protection of the building was formalized by a registration order on May 14, 1925, recognizing its heritage value. The crypt, the oldest element (14th century), illustrates the evolution of funeral and liturgical practices in Poitou-Charentes. Today, the church belongs to the commune of Saint-Claud and remains an architectural witness to the transitions between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance.
Available sources, such as the Merimée and Monumentum base, precisely locate the monument at 8 Rue Gambetta in the Charente department (code INSEE 16308). Although mapping accuracy is considered poor (level 5/10), these data confirm its anchoring in the urban landscape of Saint-Claud, between Angoulême and the borders of the former Poitou-Charentes region.
