Origin and history

The church of Saint-Côme-et-Saint-Damien de La Llau is a chapel located at La Llau, in the commune of Tech, in the department of the Pyrénées-Orientales. This religious monument, although its exact period of construction is not specified, contains a remarkable element: a wooden altarpiece carved and painted dating from the early eighteenth century. This altarpiece, classified as a historical monument, represents Saints Como and Damien, emblematic figures often associated with medicine and pharmacy.

The altarpiece of the church is referred to as PM66001271 in the Palissy base of the Ministry of Culture, which shows its heritage importance. Saints Como and Damien, patrons of doctors and pharmacists, are also at the heart of historical studies, such as those conducted by Pierre Julien in the 1950s and 1960s. These works underline the iconographic and cultural importance of these saints in this chapel.

The building is part of the religious landscape of the Pyrénées-Orientales, a region marked by a strong presence of Romanesque or Baroque churches and chapels. Although little information is available on its architectural history, its altarpiece and dedication to Saints Como and Damien make it an artistic and historical place of heritage.
