Origin and history
The Saint-Corneille church of Puycelsi was built at the site of an older building, rebuilt between the late 13th and early 14th centuries. It underwent reshuffles in the 15th century, then saw its bell tower, built in 1777 to the west, replaced in 1807 after its ruin. The capitals and caps of the nave and chapels, with archaic decoration, date from the second half of the thirteenth century.
The present interior decor was created between 1857 and 1859 by the painter Gustave Lupiat, adding an artistic touch of the 19th century to this medieval building. The church, classified as a Historical Monument in 2018, belongs to the municipality and retains a variety of architectural elements, which are witness to its many transformations.
Its location on the Church Square in Puycelsi (Tarn), and its inscription in the title of Historic Monuments underline its heritage importance in the Occitanie region. The bell tower, rebuilt after its destruction, and the painted decorations of Lupiat illustrate the stylistic and functional evolutions of the building over the centuries.
