Origin and history

The church of Saint-Crépin-et-Saint-Crépinien, located in the village of Larchamp in Mayenne, is a Catholic building whose exact origin remains unknown. It is distinguished by chapels added to the sixteenth, seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, as well as a bell tower erected in 1786 and a sacristy built at the beginning of the twentieth century. Its architecture thus combines elements of different eras, reflecting its evolution over the centuries.

In 1906, the church was the scene of a major event during the inventory of the Church's property: the women present in the building, supported by parishioners, prevented the entry of the inventory officer by closing the doors. This episode illustrates the local tensions related to the law of separation of churches and the state.

The church choir, rectangular in shape, is illuminated by two lancettes, while the nave has a lattice vault covered with plaster in 1875, imitating a boat hull overturned with ribs and lamp-ends. Among the remarkable elements, a 12-point copper chandelier, dating from 1605 and offered by Vicar Robert Fristeau, has been classified as an object since 1910. This chandelier, weighing 20 kilograms, is in the chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary.

The other chapels of the church are dedicated to Saint Job (1544), Saint Mathurin (1657) and Saint Anne (1680), bearing witness to the local devotion to these saints throughout the centuries. The building, located at the crossroads of departmental roads 224 and 523, remains a place of worship and a significant architectural heritage of the region.
