Origin and history
The church of Saint-Cybard de Périgny is a religious monument located in the commune of Périgny, Charente-Maritime (New Aquitaine). Built in the 13th and 15th centuries, it illustrates the architectural evolutions of these periods, with Gothic and flamboyant elements. Its inscription as a Historic Monument in 1925 bears witness to its heritage value, particularly for its recast vaults and campanile added in 1875.
The building consists of three naves with three spans, vaulted and partially rebuilt, notably at the western and eastern facades. The west façade houses two Gothic portals, one of which, on the left, is flamboyant in style. The frame and cover, which were rebuilt during the restoration of 1875, complete the major modifications, including the addition of a campanile at the top of the façade. These works reflect the successive adaptations of the building throughout the centuries.
The church of Saint-Cybard is a representative example of the regional religious heritage. Its inscription by decree of 27 February 1925 underlines its historical and architectural importance. Available sources, such as the Merimée and Monumentum base, confirm its status as a protected building, while specifying its exact address: 17180 Périgny, near La Rochelle.
