Origin and history
Saint-Cyr-et-Sainte-Julitte de Duneau Church, located in the Sarthe department of Pays de la Loire, is a Catholic religious building founded in the 11th century. It initially depended on the archdiacone of Montfort and was built in a Romanesque style, with a single nave extended by an apse. The building underwent several major renovations during the sixteenth, seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, including the addition of two side chapels (1550 for the north, 1607 for the south) and the construction of a western gate decorated with bas-reliefs dating from the sixteenth century.
Among the remarkable elements are a 16th century western portal, flanked by bas-reliefs depicting masks, volutes and circles, as well as a stone statue in the north wall, probably listed St George. These remains bear witness to the original decoration of the church. The bell tower arrow was listed as a historical monument in 1926, before the inscription was extended to the entire building and its sacristy in 2015.
The church, owned by the municipality of Duneau, is located in Place de l'Église, in an architectural setting marked by Romanesque influences and subsequent additions. Its designation as historical monuments in 2015 covers the entire building, including the sacristy, and highlights its heritage importance in the region of Pays de la Loire. No information is available about its current accessibility or contemporary uses.
