Origin and history
The church of Saint-Cyr-et-Sainte-Julitte de La Rixouse, located in the Jura department in Burgundy-Franche-Comté, finds its origins in the 14th century, when the local chapel was erected as a branch church. The architectural traces attest to a first major reconstruction in the 15th century, marking the beginning of a significant structural evolution. This monument, marked by southern influences, now preserves epigraphic elements and coats of arms that testify to its local historic importance.
At the beginning of the 17th century, the building underwent a series of profound transformations, as evidenced by the commemorative inscriptions dated 1629, 1635 and 1647. This work substantially changed its configuration before a new expansion was undertaken in the 18th century. This last campaign was also the occasion to add quality wall decorations, strengthening the artistic character of the church. Classified as a historical monument in 2013, it includes in its protection the wall of enclosure and the access staircase, highlighting its integration into the communal landscape.
The church is distinguished by its rich epigraphic heritage, with numerous dedications and coats of arms preserved in situ. These elements, combined with its hybrid architecture and interior decorations, make it a remarkable example of the Jurasian religious heritage. The location of the building, Church Street in La Rixouse, and its status as communal property make it a place rooted in local life, between historical memory and contemporary use.
