Origin and history

The church of Saint-Denis d'Avion is a Catholic religious building located in the commune of Avion, in the department of Pas-de-Calais (Hauts-de-France). Consecrated to Saint Denis, it is part of the parish of Saint John XXIII of Avion, attached to the diocese of Arras. She is one of the four bell towers of the Dean of Lens-Liévin. Its architecture, typical of the hall churches, is distinguished by a sober facade in red bricks, a broken gate with yoursures and a two-paned roof strongly inclined. The bell tower, of regionalist style, is positioned laterally, north of the building.

The present church was built in the 1930s to replace a medieval building completely destroyed at the end of the First World War. This conflict, which has profoundly affected the region, has led to the reconstruction of many buildings, including places of worship. The Saint-Denis church was restored in 2003, demonstrating its importance to the local community.

The building is part of the Christian architectural landscape of Nord-Pas-de-Calais, a region where brick churches are frequent. Its history reflects the upheavals of the twentieth century, including the destruction of world wars and subsequent reconstruction efforts. Today, it remains an active place of worship and a symbol of local heritage.
