Origin and history

The church of Saint-Denis de Cizay-la-Madeleine, located in the department of Maine-et-Loire, is a religious building whose origins date back to at least the thirteenth century. It is distinguished by its bell tower and choir of this period, while major changes were made in the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries. The northern chapel was enlarged in 1494, and the bell tower's arrow was rebuilt in 1744 by the entrepreneur Louis Aubert. These transformations reflect the architectural evolution and liturgical needs of the parish over the centuries.

The original nave, dating from the boundary between the 11th and 12th centuries, was destroyed and replaced by a reconstruction carried out between 1863 and 1865 under the direction of architect Charles Joly-Leterme. A west porch, added in the 18th century, was demolished in 1857. The church, together with the facades and roofs of the adjoining presbytery, were inscribed in the historical monuments by decree of 26 October 1972, recognizing their heritage value.

This monument illustrates the religious and architectural history of Anjou, marking the local landscape since the Middle Ages. Its inscription as a historical monument in 1972 underscores its importance in the regional heritage, while at the same time bearing witness to the construction techniques and artistic styles that followed centuries. The church remains today a place of worship and a symbol of the cultural heritage of Cizay-la-Madeleine.
