Origin and history

The church of Saint-Denis de La Norville originated in the 12th century, when a first parish church was built, probably by dismembering the parish of Saint-Germain-lès-Arpajon. This primitive building, attested to in the 13th century, was destroyed during the Hundred Years War, resulting in the temporary connection of the parish with that of Saint-Germain-les-Arpajon. The reconstruction of the present church began in 1445, thanks to the financial mobilization of parishioners, in a context of post-conflict recovery. It was solemnly consecrated on 6 June 1542, marking its central role in local religious life.

The architecture of the church, characteristic of the 15th century, blends mill and sandstone for chains and foothills. Its square bell tower, three storeys open and styled in a building, dominates a nave of five spans flanked by a north side. The choir, with three sections, is lit by a flamboyant reamped window decorated with 19th-century stained glass windows illustrating the life of Saint Denis. The vaults on dogive crosses, carried by committed columns, have historiated or armorized keys, while the choir is decorated with grotesque asses. The building, restored in 1964, has been listed as historic monuments since October 1, 1952.

Around the church are traces of the parish past, including a monumental iron cross and tombs of the 18th and 19th centuries. Among them were those of influential members of the community: mayors Albert-Etienne Daurive (died 1838) and Albert-Aimé Daurive (1857), lawyer Etienne-Firmin Daurive (1790), and Jacques-Louis Baron (1731–15), former owner of the castle and mayor. These graves, together with five gravestones of the Castries family, testify to the social and political anchoring of the church in local history.
