Origin and history
The church of Saint-Denis de Catheux, built in the 4th quarter of the 12th century, is a remarkable specimen of Romanesque architecture in the Oise. It consists of a nave of four spans framed by collaterals, extended by a rectangular choir with flat bedside. A notable feature lies in the first arches of warheads experienced in the choir from the second quarter of the 12th century, showing a transition towards Gothic. The frame, redone in the 16th century in the shape of a keg, contrasts with the original structure.
Outside, the central window of the bedside features a trompe l'oeil painting depicting flamboyant fillings, a posterior artistic addition. The building, registered with the Historical Monuments since 2013, illustrates the evolution of medieval constructive techniques in an area where complete Romanesque churches are rare. Its integral preservation (nef, collaterals, choir) makes it a precious testimony of 12th century religious art in Picardia.
The location of the church at 7 Rue Principale in Catheux (Oise) is documented in the Mérimée base under the code INSEE 60131 attached to the commune of Beauvais. Although geographic accuracy is considered fair (note 5/10), the building remains a major heritage landmark for the village. Community property, its current use (cult, visits, events) is not specified in the available sources.
