Origin and history
The Saint-Dominique church of Rura is a religious building built during the 2nd quarter of the 19th century. Located in the commune of Roura, Guyana, it represents an architectural and cultural example of the Christian heritage of this overseas region. Its listing in the inventory of Historic Monuments, effective since May 25, 2023, underscores its heritage importance and its need for preservation.
In 2023, the Saint-Dominique Church was selected by the Mission Patrimoine to receive exceptional funding under the Lotto Patrimoine, an initiative led by the Stéphane Bern Foundation. This financial support aims to restore and enhance this monument, which occupies a central place in local life. The building, owned by the municipality, is located in Gaston Monnerville Square, in the heart of Roura.
Available sources, including the Merimée and PSS bases, as well as Wikipedia and Monumentum references, confirm its status as a fully protected church, including its cadastral plot AB No. 39. Although the details of its initial history remain brief, its recent inclusion and inclusion in safeguard programs testify to its current role in preserving Guyana's heritage.
