Origin and history

The church Saint-Éloi d'Itancourt is a religious monument located in the commune of Itancourt, in the department of Aisne, in the Hauts-de-France region. Although its exact period of construction is not mentioned, it is part of a village whose history dates back to at least the thirteenth century, with a first mention written in 1298 under the name of Aintencourt. The village, crossed by the water divide between the Artois-Picardie and Seine-Normandie basins, experienced a rich toponymic evolution, reflecting its historical affiliation to the diocese of Noyon under the Ancien Régime.

During World War I, Itancourt was completely razed after being crossed by the Hindenburg line, a German trench. The church, like the rest of the village, had to be rebuilt after the conflict. During World War II, the village was occupied by the Germans in 1940 before being released in September 1944 by the 28th American Infantry Division. These events have profoundly affected the local history and, by extension, that of the religious building.

In the 18th century, Cassini's map revealed that Itancourt was a parish without an empierré path, with two windmills made of wood that had now disappeared. A stone calvary was also present west of the village. These elements suggest a rural and agricultural landscape, where the church played a central role in community life. The municipality, now classified as a rural village, retains traces of this past through its heritage and its local associations, such as Espérance, founded in 1932.

In administrative terms, Itancourt is attached to the arrondissement of Saint-Quentin and is part of the community of communes of Val de l'Oise. The village, which had 999 inhabitants in 2023, was also marked by more recent events, such as the inauguration of a sports complex in 2005 by Xavier Bertrand, then Minister of Health, and Jean-François Lamour, Minister of Sports. These local dynamics highlight the church's attachment to an active and resilient community.
