Origin and history
St. Stephen's Church in Etrechy is a Catholic religious building dedicated to St. Stephen's, protomartyr. It is located in the city centre of Etrechy, on the Place de la Ramée, close to the town hall and the river June. Its architecture and location make it a central point of the commune, both geographically and spiritually.
The building was built between the 13th and 14th centuries, a period marked by the rise of Gothic architecture in Île-de-France. Although the details of its construction remain partially unknown, its classification as historic monuments in 1908 reflects its heritage importance and architectural value.
Located in the Essonne department, in the Île-de-France region (not in the Grand Est, contrary to an initial erroneous mention), the church is part of a territory where parish churches played a key role in medieval community life. These buildings served not only as places of worship, but also as social and cultural landmarks for the inhabitants, reflecting the religious practices and local dynamics of the time.
