Étienne Dones - Village priest Initiator of construction, died in 1753.

Origin and history

The Saint-Étienne church of Uchentein, located in the village of Uchentein at 971 m above sea level, is a baroque religious building built during the first half of the eighteenth century. It is characterized by a unique rectangular nave covered with irregular slates and a bell tower with three bays, typical of the region. Two side chapels, added in the 19th century, complete its structure, while its choir is decorated with 18th century painted and gilded woodwork.

The church was erected under the impulse of parish priest Étienne Dones, who died in 1753, whose name remains associated with its construction. Classified as a historical monument by order of May 10, 1995, it replaces a previously cancelled inscription (1992). Its furniture, including four paintings listed in the Palissy base, and its integrarally preserved decor reflect its heritage importance.

The site is managed and valued by the Art Culture Heritage Association of Bordes-Uchentein, which works for its renovation and promotion, including through an illustrated brochure on the five local churches. The building, a communal property, is part of a landscape marked by the departmental road 704 and a remarkable prehistoric and historical heritage.

Architecturally, the church illustrates a regional baroque style influenced by the seventeenth century, with a bell tower-wall with volutes and a choir highlighted by side chapels. Its altitude and its placement in solane (sunset) underline its anchoring in the Ariegean territory, between religious tradition and cultural heritage.
