Origin and history

The church of Saint-Étienne de Bailleau-l It occupies a central place in the village, accessible from the Church Square, between Rue de la Libération and Rue des Tilleuls. Its location and architecture make it a historical and spiritual landmark for the local community.

On the night of April 2 to 3, 1900, the church was the victim of a theft of liturgical furniture. Burglars entered the sacristy by forcing the bars of the window overlooking the cemetery. They stole priestly ornaments in gold and silver, abandoning less precious objects on the spot. The estimated value of the stolen goods, all new, was 550 francs at the time.

The building, although little documented on its exact origins, illustrates the traditional role of parish churches in French villages. These places of worship served not only for religious practice, but also for community gathering and conservation of local heritage. Their presence often structured urban planning and social life in rural towns.
