Origin and history

The church Saint-Étienne de Cadenet, located in the Vaucluse department in Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, is a religious building whose origins date back to at least the twelfth century. Originally linked to the abbey Saint-Eusèbe de Saignon, it was ceded to the abbey Saint-Victor of Marseilles in 1173. Its architecture reflects several periods of construction, with a Gothic nave dating from the 14th century, on a Romanesque basis.

The work continued in the sixteenth, seventeenth, eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, giving the church a mixture of architectural styles. The nave, in Gothic style, is the oldest part still visible today. The presbytery, built in the 17th century, was listed as historical monuments in 1981, while the church itself was classified in 1990.

The building, owned by the commune of Cadenet, is a testament to the architectural and religious evolution of the region. Its spiral staircase, facades and roofs are protected elements, reflecting its heritage importance. The church is located at 23bis Cours Voltaire, in the center of the city.

The classification and partial inscription of the church and the presbytery underline their historical and artistic value. These successive protections, in 1981 and 1990, guarantee the preservation of this emblematic monument of Provencal heritage.
