Origin and history

The church of Saint-Étienne de Chepeniers, located in the Charente-Maritime department in New Aquitaine, is a religious building dating back to the 12th and 15th centuries. It presents an architecture combining Romanesque and Gothic styles, with a nave and a vaulted choir of warheads, characteristic of the transition between these two periods. The walls and vaults were painted around 1905, adding a late decorative touch to the whole.

The Gothic portal of the western facade, adorned with a broken arch archeque decorated with foliage, bears witness to the influence of Gothic art. Conversely, the upper floor of the bell tower, redone in Romanesque style in 1905, illustrates a restoration aimed at restoring a medieval aspect. The flat bedside, illuminated by a triplet and a rose, as well as the span under the bell tower covered with a dome on pendants, underline the architectural complexity of the building.

The Saint-Étienne church was listed as historic monuments by order of 13 March 1935, recognizing its heritage value. Owned by the commune of Chepeniers, it embodies local religious and architectural history, from the Middle Ages to the restorations of the early twentieth century.

The available sources, including Wikipedia and Monumentum, confirm its importance in the heritage of Charente-Maritime. Its address, located in the village of Chepeniers, makes it a central point of community life, both historically and culturally.

The protected elements include the entire building, whose structure reflects stylistic evolutions between the 12th and 15th centuries. The nave, dating from the 13th century, and the facade, also from this period, complete this painting of a church at once Romanesque and Gothic, marked by subsequent interventions.

Finally, the location of the church, specified by GPS coordinates and an approximate address, allows it to be located in the geographical context of the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. Its role in the religious and architectural landscape of Charente-Maritime makes it an emblematic monument, both a place of worship and a witness to local history.
