Origin and history

Saint-Étienne Church, located in Faux-la-Montagne in the Creuse department, is a religious building dating back to the 13th century. Its architecture reflects several periods of construction, with elements dating from the thirteenth, fifteenth and nineteenth centuries. The patronage of this church historically belonged to the cathedral chapter of Limoges, stressing its importance in the region.

The nave of the church, dating from the 13th century, was bewitched in the 15th century, when a northern chapel and a bell tower-wall to the west were also added. The latter, characteristic of rural churches, is decorated with crows carved with masks. In the 19th century, major repairs were undertaken, including the construction of a southern chapel on the site of an old demolished chapel, as well as work on the roof and bell tower.

The building was listed as historic monuments by order of 5 August 1963, thereby recognizing its heritage value. The property of the church belongs to the municipality of Faux-la-Montagne. The vaults and the oriental windows, typical of the 15th and 16th centuries, as well as the chapels added later, illustrate the architectural and religious evolution of this Limousin region.

The archives mention estimates prepared for repairs, such as that of 1877 by Sieur Tarneaud for the repair of the roof. These documents demonstrate the continuing efforts to preserve this heritage, despite the transformations that have taken place over the centuries. Today, Saint-Étienne Church remains a symbol of local history and rural religious architecture.
