Origin and history
The church Saint-Étienne de Fontenay is a Catholic religious building located in the commune of Fontenay, in the department of Indre, in the Centre-Val de Loire region. It is part of the Berrichonne Champagne and depends on the archdiocese of Bourges. Built between the 2nd half of the 16th century and the 3rd quarter of the 19th century, it illustrates an architecture combining medieval heritage and modern transformations, notably with its seigneurial chapel called the Dîme, classified as a historical monument in 2005.
The present church was largely rebuilt between 1863 and 1865 under the direction of architect Choisnard, however retaining older elements such as a 16th century fire. This tomb, adorned with an epitaph in cartridge and carved slabs with macabre iconography, served as burial for the local lords until the end of the 18th century. The seigneurial chapel, with its compartmental ceiling and decor adapted to the tastes of the Renaissance, bears witness to the social and religious importance of the local nobility.
Partially classified as historical monuments by decree of 29 March 2005, the chapel of the Dîme (cadastre A 297) is now owned by the commune. The building is integrated into the religious landscape of Indre, marked by a rural and seigneurial history, where parish churches played a central role in community life, between worship, power and family memory.
The location of the church, at 5004 Le Bourg in Fontenay, reflects its anchoring in the village fabric. Its architecture and furniture, although partially redesigned in the 19th century, preserve traces of the funeral and artistic practices of the local elites under the Ancien Régime. The Observatoire du Patrimoine Religiouse and the Mérimée base list this monument as a typical example of Berrichon ecclesiastical heritage.
