Origin and history
The Saint-Étienne church of Javerlhac-et-la-Chapelle-Saint-Robert is a historic monument located in the Dordogne department of New Aquitaine. It consists of two adjacent naves, one dating from the 12th century and the other from the 16th century. The oldest nave features a dome above the choir, while the Romanesque bell tower, with a porch in the middle of the hangar, houses a fire containing gimmers. These architectural features illustrate the evolution of styles between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance.
The building was listed as a Historic Monument by order of 12 October 1948. The protection specifically concerns the church as a whole, stressing its heritage importance. Owned by the commune, it is located at 5004 Rue de l'Église, in an environment whose location is considered satisfactory (note of 7/10). Its hybrid architecture, combining Romanesque and Renaissance elements, reflects the religious and artistic transformations of the region.
The presence of a fire with gimmers in the bell tower porch suggests a memorial or funeral function associated with the building. These laymen, although not detailed in the sources, bear witness to common practices in medieval churches, where local notables were buried near places of worship. The lack of details about the characters represented limits interpretation, but their presence reinforces the historical character of the site.
Available sources, including Monumentum and Merimée data, confirm the address and Insee code of the municipality (24214), attached to the district of Périgueux. The church, opened to visit according to communal information, is part of a typical architectural landscape of the Dordogne, marked by the coexistence of Romanesque and Gothic or Renaissance styles. Its state of conservation and accessibility make it a significant historic place in New Aquitaine.
