Moines de l'abbaye de Maillezais - Founders At the origin of the Prioral Church

Origin and history

The church of Saint-Étienne de Marans, located in Charente-Maritime, was founded in the 12th century by monks of the Abbey of Maillezais. This religious edifice, first priory, suffered destruction during the Franco-English conflicts and was rebuilt in the 15th century. Religion's wars further aggravate his condition, leading to his gradual abandonment.

In the 19th century, the church, considered too degraded to be restored, was replaced by a new church of Notre-Dame inaugurated in 1902. Sentenced to demolition in 1920, it was saved in extremis thanks to the mobilization of inhabitants. His remains, including the cross of the transept and the Romanesque capitals, were classified as historical monuments on November 10, 1921.

The preserved elements include ogival berries, a cupola on trunks, and an octagonal bell tower. The capitals, historical or adorned with geometric motifs, bear witness to Romanesque art. The building illustrates the vicissitudes of a medieval heritage marked by conflicts and urban developments.
