Origin and history
The church of Saint-Étienne de Mauzac, located in the village of the same name in Haute-Garonne (Occitanie), was probably built in the late 15th century, as evidenced by its architectural style. This place of worship, typical of late medieval rural churches, reflects the importance of religion in the daily life of local communities. Its construction coincides with a period of reconstruction and beautification of the churches after the unrest of the Hundred Years War, although the source text does not specify the exact circumstances of its foundation.
Inside, the church houses a remarkable decoration of 18th-century woodwork, adding a baroque dimension to the original Gothic building. These elements, as well as the paintings made around the 1830s, illustrate the stylistic evolutions and successive beautification campaigns. A major restoration, carried out around 1860, included doubling the earth walls by a brick and pebble masonry, while painting the ceiling. This work was probably aimed at strengthening the structure and modernizing the interior.
Ranked among the Historical Monuments since 3 February 1999, the Saint-Étienne church now belongs to the commune of Mauzac. Its inscription bears witness to its heritage value, both for its architecture and for its furniture. Although the source text does not mention any major historical events related to this place, its existence continues to mark the religious and cultural landscape of the region, between Toulouse and the Pyrenees.
The location of the church, specified as "a priori satisfactory" (note 6/10), places the building at 4 Place Saint-Étienne, in the centre of the village. This address, combined with GPS coordinates, identifies its anchoring in the urban fabric of Mauzac. However, no information is available on its current accessibility, opening times or possible tourist vocations (visits, rentals, accommodation).
