Origin and history
Église Saint-Étienne de Saint-Estèphe, located in the Gironde department in Nouvelle-Aquitaine, is an emblematic monument of 18th-century religious architecture. Its reconstruction began in 1764, and it now houses one of the most beautiful religious decorative ensembles in the region, including retables, paintings and period furniture. This heritage bears witness to the artistic and spiritual importance of the Baroque period in Aquitaine.
In the mid-19th century, the church underwent major changes. In 1843, expansion works were undertaken, followed by the construction of the current bell tower around 1855, according to plans of the Bordeaux architect Henri Duphot. These changes reflect the stylistic evolutions and liturgical needs of the time. At the end of the 19th century, the building was enriched with stalls and an organ installed in 1892, consolidating its central role in community life.
Listed as a historic monument on September 8, 1995, Saint-Étienne Church illustrates the continuity of the girondin religious heritage. Its bell tower, designed by Duphot, and its richly decorated interior make it a must-see place. Official protection underscores its architectural and historical value, while preserving a unique artistic heritage for future generations.
