Church: by decree of 22 October 1913
Origin and history
The church of Saint-Étienne de Villerouge-Termenès is a religious building located in the village of the same name, in the department of Aude in Occitanie region. Built between the 13th and 14th centuries, it is distinguished by its sober architecture: a single nave vaulted in an acute cradle, reinforced by two doubles, and a slightly posterior square bedside choir. Its three-gable roof, decorated with crows and gargoyles, as well as its Renaissance-style altarpiece, testify to the stylistic evolutions of the late medieval era.
Classified as historical monuments by order of 22 October 1913, this church now belongs to the commune. Its simple plan and interior decorative elements, such as the arch over a cross of warheads illuminated by three windows, reflect local architectural practices. The choir houses a Renaissance altarpiece, a posterior addition that highlights the continued use of the building throughout the centuries. The entrance gate, located in the south, follows a common tradition in southern Romanesque and Gothic churches.
The village of Villerouge-Termenès, like many localities in the Aude at that time, was organized around its parish church, a central place of religious and community life. The buildings of that period served not only for worship, but also as a refuge or assembly place for the inhabitants. The sober architecture of Saint Stephen, typical of small rural churches, illustrates the adaptation of Gothic styles to local resources and needs. The presence of a Renaissance altarpiece suggests further beautification, possibly linked to increased prosperity or local patronage.
Available sources (Wikipedia, Monumentum) confirm its ranking in 1913 and its current communal property. The precise address, 3 Rue de la Gleisa, as well as its Insee code (11335) anchor the building in the territory of the former Languedoc-Roussillon region, now integrated into Occitanie. No information is available on any historical characters related to its construction or subsequent history.
