Origin and history
The church of Saint-Étienne du Mas-d'Azil, built in 1673, rises on the ruins of a Benedictine abbey razed in the 16th century during the Wars of Religion. This place, marked by Protestantism, was partially destroyed in 1625 during the siege led by the Marshal of Thémines. The octagonal bell tower, with a slate bulb, is an architectural rarity in Ariège, shared only with the church Saint-Barthélémy de Caumont. This bell tower was listed as a historic monument in 1950.
The church porch, preceded by red stone columns, evokes a Spanish colonial style, with a door decorated with pilasters and volutes. Inside, a painting of the Baptism of Christ (1844) by John Auguste Dubouloz is listed in the Palissy base. The building, located opposite the Museum of Prehistory, is animated by a local association organizing concerts and exhibitions.
The church illustrates the post-war Catholic reconstruction of Religion in a region deeply marked by religious conflicts. Its hybrid architecture, combining local influences and Baroque elements, reflects the cultural exchanges of the time. The bell tower bulb, typical of mountainous regions, highlights the adaptation of architectural forms to climatic constraints and local traditions.
