Church, except the sacristy (Box AE 454): inscription by decree of 9 September 1992
Origin and history
The church of Saint-Étienne-et-Saint-Thibault de Bonvillers, classified as Monument Historique, has its origins in the 12th century, a period of which today remains the lower part of the nave, the choir and the tower. These architectural elements bear witness to his original Romanesque style, characteristic of the religious constructions of this period in Lorraine. The building, owned by the municipality of Mont-Bonvillers, illustrates the importance of parish churches in the medieval organisation of villages, serving as both a place of worship, a community gathering and a territorial marker.
In the 15th century, a western elevation was added, reflecting late Gothic architectural developments or the need to expand the community. Later, in 1758, the nave was enhanced, as evidenced by a date worn on the structure, while the entrance door and windows were pierced. These 18th-century changes probably met aesthetic or practical requirements, such as improving brightness or adapting to the liturgical norms of the time. Sacristy, not protected by the 1992 Registration Order, suggests less significant later additions to the heritage plan.
The church, partially protected since 9 September 1992 (with the exception of the sacristy), thus embodies nearly nine centuries of local history. Its composite architecture, combining primitive novels, Gothic additions and classical changes, offers a material testimony to the social, religious and technical transformations that marked Lorraine from the Middle Ages to the modern era. The location of the monument, in the village of Mont-Bonvillers (département of Meurthe-et-Moselle), reinforces its anchoring in the rural heritage of the Great East.
