Origin and history
The Saint-Étienne church, located in Connangles in the Haute-Loire department, is a former priory first mentioned in 1299, affiliated with La Chaise-Dieu. Its architecture combines Romanesque elements, visible in the apse, and Gothic, present in the nave. The roman bedside is decorated with a cornice supported by carved modillons, while the wall is presented with a door decorated with deciduous capitals and volutes.
The nave, simple and vaulted with warheads, extends over two spans, with a north chapel in advance. The bell tower, built in 1828, was raised in 1856-1857, and its arrow was rebuilt in 1935. The building, with the exception of the bell tower, has been listed as historic monuments since 1987, demonstrating its heritage importance.
The church illustrates the architectural and religious evolution of the region, from its medieval origins to the modifications of the 19th century. Its triumphal double roller arch and sculpted details reflect the craftsmanship and artistic influences of each period of construction.
