Origin and history
The church Saint-Étienne de Bogève, located in the Haute-Savoie department in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, is an emblematic Catholic monument. Although its initial period remained indefinite, its documented history began in the 18th century, when it was already dedicated to St Stephen, the first Christian martyr. This place of worship reflects the deep religious anchor of the local community, typical of the Savoyard villages of the Old Regime, where the church played a central role in social and spiritual life.
The present building, erected in 1832, replaces an older church and occupies the site. Its architecture adopts the Sardinian neoclassical style, common in the region after the annexation of Savoy to the Kingdom of Sardinia in 1815. This style is characterized by clean lines, rigorous symmetry and Italian influences, marking a break with earlier Baroque or Gothic forms. The construction of 1832 was thus part of a period of post-revolutionary architectural and religious renewal.
In the 20th century, St. Stephen's Church was completely renovated in 1993 to preserve its heritage while modernizing its facilities. Among its remarkable elements is a small organ, directed by the factor Xavier Silbermann, whose presence demonstrates the importance of liturgical music in local tradition. This instrument, though modest, illustrates the know-how of regional artisans and the attachment of parishioners to their places of worship.
Integrated into the Diocese of Annecy, the church is part of a wider network of religious monuments in Haute-Savoie, reflecting the Catholic heritage of the region. Its maintenance and enhancement, notably via platforms such as Clochers de France or the Observatoire du Patrimoine Religiouse, underline its sustainable role in Bogève's cultural and spiritual landscape.
