Origin and history

Saint-Eubert Church in Vendeville, also known as the Sanctuary of Saint Rita, is a Catholic parish church located in the North. She is known mainly for her pilgrimage dedicated to Saint Rita, which attracts faithful throughout the year, with highlights such as Holy Week, the great novena and the feast of the Assumption. This pilgrimage is one of the most important in the region, with an average daily influx of 300 people.

In 1928, Father Henri Dumortier, parish priest of the church, accepted a statue of Saint Rita offered by a Lilloise, Jeanne Dypersin, in thanks for the graces received. The statue, transported to Vendeville, is solemnly blessed, and a brotherhood dedicated to Saint Rita is founded. That same year, the abbot received a relic from the saint of the monastery of Cascia, where his body had been resting since 1457. These events mark the beginning of the development of worship and pilgrimage.

The pilgrimage of Saint Rita is rhythmic by several annual highlights. The great novena, from May 14 to 22, includes the blessing of roses, an emblematic ritual. Easter and August 15th, Assumption Day, are also major dates, with an influx of up to 2,000 people. During these events, open-air Masses are organized to welcome the crowd of pilgrims.

The church of Saint-Eubert has thus become a place of major devotion, attracting faithful from all over the region and beyond. Its history is closely linked to the figure of Saint Rita, whose statue and relic are at the heart of local religious practices. The sanctuary today embodies a living tradition, mixing faith, history and community.
