Origin and history

The Saint-Eutrope church of Bellefond, located in the Gironde department in Nouvelle-Aquitaine, is a Catholic religious building whose construction began in the 12th century under the impulse of regular canons of the order of Saint-Augustin. The latter, for lack of financial resources, could not complete the nave, leaving an ambitious initial project with a long nave and a Latin cross unfinished. Only the western wall, a 22-metre transept and an apse flanked by absidioles were realized. The western facade, built in the 13th century on a temporary basis, gives the whole a singular appearance, while the interior capitals of the abside share stylistic similarities with those of the abside of La Sauve-Majeure, dated the second half of the 12th century.

The priory of Bellefond, initially autonomous, was placed under the care of the monastery of La Sauve-Majeure in 1186, before being ceded to the Benedictines in 1190, following the financial difficulties of the Canons. The Wars of Religion in the 16th century caused significant damage to the church and the claustral buildings. The northern absidiole was shaved around 1850. The building, partially restored between 1863 and 1866, has its present entrance in the north wall of the transept, built in 1865. The stained glass windows of the abside (1867) and the southern absidiole (1886), offered by local donors, testify to subsequent beautifications.

Outside, sculpted patterns, typical of the Romanesque Aquitaine, illustrate moralizing scenes denouncing differences in chastity, reflecting the internal tensions of the religious community. These representations, combined with evil figures, highlight the spiritual challenges of the canons. The church, inscribed in the historical monuments in 1925, also preserves 14th century baptismal fonts, from a chapel today destroyed. The ruins of the adjacent priory, protected since 2001, recall the past importance of this monastic site in the region.
