Origin and history

The Saint-Félix church in Bayssan is a desacralized Romanesque building located in the Hérault department in Béziers, Occitanie region. Today integrated into the Bayssan estate, it is used as a cultural space by the Western Exit Theatre, hosting concerts and shows. Its architecture and history make it a notable vestige of the local medieval religious heritage.

The church is mentioned for the first time in the cartular of Béziers between 1118 and 1129, under the name ecclesia San Felici de Baxano. At that time it depended on the Saint-Nazaire chapter of Béziers, which underlined its importance in the ecclesiastical organization of the region. Its location, south of Béziers near the D66 departmental road linking Maureilhan to Valras-Plage, makes it a historical landmark in the Dickerian landscape.

Desacralized, the church lost its original religious function but found a new cultural vocation. The Bayssan estate, where it stands, is now a place dedicated to performing arts, preserving the building while making it accessible to the public. This reconversion illustrates a contemporary tendency to value historical heritage through modern uses.
