Origin and history

The church Saint-Ferréol de Saint-Forgeux is a religious building located in the Rhône department, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. It is dedicated to Saint Ferréol, whose name inspired that of the village (Forgeux, derived from Ferréol). It depends on the parish of Saint John XXIII of the Pays de Tarare, attached to the Archdiocese of Lyon. Its architecture and history reflect the importance of Catholic worship in this region for centuries.

The present church was built between 1828 and 1832 under the supervision of the council of factory, a local institution responsible for managing the church's property. The bell tower was erected in 1835, a few years after the main building was completed. This work marked a period of renovation and expansion of places of worship in the region in the 19th century.

In 1880, the church was enlarged, and the gate of the old church, which had been preserved since 1828, was relocated as the entrance to the presbytery. This re-use reflects a desire to preserve historical elements while modernizing the building. Among the particularities of the church are the presence of three bells, one of which, dated 1503, is one of the oldest in the diocese of Lyon, highlighting the link between this place and a multi-severe religious tradition.
