Origin and history
The church Saint-Firmin de Sourdon is a religious building located in the village of Sourdon, in the department of the Somme, in the Hauts-de-France region. Its initial construction dates back to the 15th century, marking its anchoring in the local medieval heritage. The building underwent a major reconstruction in the 19th century, then adopting a neo-Gothic style that contrasts with its older origins.
Damaged in 1918 during the First World War, the church was later restored to its cult function and central role in the community. Its architecture is distinguished by the use of bricks, typical of the region, and a bell tower topped by an arrow in slate. The portal, framed by stone, bears witness to a craftsmanship preserved throughout the centuries.
Inside, the church houses several objects classified as historical monuments, including 16th and 17th century wooden statues, such as that of St.Firmin cephalophore or of the Virgin with Child. These artistic elements, along with an 18th century altar, illustrate the evolution of religious practices and artistic styles in Picardia. The prayer board dedicated to Saint Aubin strengthens the link between the building and local worship, rooted in regional history.
Saint Firmin, bishop of Amiens in the third or fourth century and major figure of Picard Christianity, is the patron saint of the church. Its cephalophoreal representation (with its head) recalls its martyrdom and its importance in the Amineno religious tradition. This choice of dedication highlights Sourdon's historic anchor in the Diocese of Amiens, while honoring a locally venerated saint.
