Origin and history
The Saint-Francchy church of Amazy, located in the Nièvre in Burgundy-Franche-Comté, is a religious building built in the late 15th or early 16th century. It is distinguished by a nave consisting of a two-span, squared main craft, flanked by a collateral to the south and two large arches broken to the north. The choir, with a right span and a three-paned apse, is completed by a side chapel and a chapel of baptismal fonts arranged in the span under bell tower. Outside, traces of covers are visible, especially on the north wall.
In 1756, a notable event occurred: lightning struck the bell tower, destroying the arrow, a gargoyle and several steps on the stairs. This incident illustrates the vulnerability of religious buildings to the weather, which is common in this region. Subsequent repairs and modifications, such as the reconstruction of the sacristy in 1889 by Ch. Relute according to the plans of the architect Alexander, or the works of 1891 on the foothills and walls by the entrepreneur Etienne Pier, testify to the continuous efforts to preserve this heritage.
Classified as a Historical Monument by decree of 16 March 1921, the church now belongs to the municipality of Amazy. Its architecture, combining late Gothic elements and traces of restorations, reflects both its turbulent history and its central role in local life. The sacristy, covered with zinc and located to the right of the choir, as well as the cover in sub-works, recall the successive adaptations to meet liturgical and structural needs.
The location of the building, specified as being at 3 Place de l'Eglise in Amazy, is assessed with satisfactory a priori accuracy (note of 6/10). This monument, open or not to the visit, remains a major architectural and historical testimony of the Nièvre, anchored in the cultural landscape of Burgundy-Franche-Comté.
