Origin and history
Saint-Frézal Church of Saint-Frézal-d'Albuges is a Roman Catholic building located in the department of Lozère, in the Occitan region. Built between the 12th and 13th centuries, it is distinguished by a vaulted nave in a cradle and a semicircular apse adorned with arches in the middle of a hanger. Its capitals carved of leaves and its south gate to yousures in broken arch testify to its medieval heritage.
The first written mention of the church dates back to 1227, although its construction seems earlier. Damaged in 1584 during religious conflicts, it retains architectural elements typical of the period, such as columns and acanthe motifs. Classified as a historical monument in 1984, it is now part of the municipality and remains a remarkable example of the religious heritage of Lozeria.
Its southern portal, decorated with stylized characters and d-acanthe tores, as well as its cul-de-four vault, reflect the influence of local Romanesque workshops. The building, opened to the visit, is part of a landscape marked by the history of Gevaudan and the religious tensions of the Renaissance. Its protection as historical monuments underscores its heritage and artistic importance.
