Origin and history
The church Saint-Front de Saint-Front, located in the Charente department, is a religious building built from the twelfth to the fifteenth century. It illustrates a marked architectural evolution, combining Romanesque elements (such as the round columns of the transept) and flamboyant Gothic additions, especially to the flat bedside. Its structure in Latin cross, covered with 13th century ribbed vaults and a dome on pendants, bears witness to various constructive techniques. The fortification of the church during the Hundred Years War, with cross-shaped murderers and a raised square bell tower, reflects the tensions of this period.
The church is built above a natural cave, potentially used as a crypt, adding a symbolic and practical dimension to its settlement. The bell tower, with a spiral staircase accessible by a square turret, overlooks the facade and features broken arched windows. The foundations of the walls, unchanged since the Romanesque era, contrast with later modifications, such as the flamboyant ornaments of the 15th century. These characteristics make the church a representative example of medieval architectural adaptations, combining religious, defensive and community functions.
The Saint-Front Church is classified as a Historical Monument by decree of 3 May 1956 and now belongs to the commune. Its plan and its decorative elements, such as the ribs of the vaults or the columns attached to pilasters, offer a panorama of the successive styles that marked its construction. The accuracy of its location remains mediocre (level 5/10), but its approximate address, 9 Place de l'Eglise in Saint-Front, allows to situate it in the heritage landscape of New Aquitaine.
