Origin and history
The Saint-Front church, located in the eponymous village of Haute-Loire, is a religious building marked by two major periods of construction: the end of the 12th century and reshuffles in the 18th century. It bears witness to medieval monastic architecture, with a plan including transept, circular apse and apsidioles, characteristic of Auvergnes Romanesque churches. Its apse, adorned with archatures and columnettes in crime, as well as its vaulted nave in dogives cradle, reflect the influence of the Monastier Abbey, of which it was an addiction.
The portal, redone at the end of the 15th century, and the south side, added at the end of the 16th century, illustrate the late stylistic evolutions of the monument. Ranked as historical monuments in 1909, the church preserves remarkable architectural elements, such as the cornice of the north absidiole, decorated with besans, or the chorus span covered with a ridge vault. These details highlight its heritage importance in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region.
Today owned by the municipality of Saint-Front, the church remains a place of worship and a testimony of local religious history. Its ranking in 1909 allowed to preserve its medieval characteristics, while integrating later modifications, such as the south side. The building thus embodies almost nine centuries of architectural and spiritual history, anchored in the landscape of the Haute-Loire.
