Origin and history
The Saint-Front church of Saint-Front-sur-Nizonne is an emblematic monument of 12th century Romanesque architecture. It is distinguished by its unique nave, its blind arched bell tower overtaking an octagonal dome at the cross of the transept, and a porch in full hanger decorated with geometric motifs (diamond dots) and carved capitals representing interlaces and characters. These stylistic elements illustrate the influence of regional Romanesque art, mixing structural sobriety and decorative richness.
The porch and the base of the bell tower were inscribed in the Historical Monuments by order of 6 December 1948, recognizing their heritage value. The location of the building, in the village of Saint-Front-sur-Nizonne (Dordogne), is attested by the GPS coordinates and administrative references of the Merimée base. Although the cartographic accuracy is considered "satisfactory" (note 7/10), the church remains a major historical landmark for the municipality, a municipal property and potentially accessible to the public.
The photographs available, such as Rudolf Pohl's Creative Commons license, highlight the architectural details of the porch and bell tower. These images, combined with Monumentum data, document the current state of the monument. No information is provided on its contemporary use (visits, rentals, accommodation), but its status as a Historical Monument suggests an active preservation of this medieval heritage.
