Origin and history

The church of Saint-Furcy, dedicated to Fursy de Péronne, founder of the Benedictine abbey Saint-Pierre de Lagny-sur-Marne, is an emblematic religious building of the city. Built on the remains of an older building, it underwent several reconstructions, notably from the thirteenth century. His history was marked by his closure to worship during the French Revolution, when his choir and bell tower were demolished. Today, only exterior remains, including the 16th century facade and three nave spans, bear witness to its past.

The main façade of the church overlooks the Temple Street, while its south-southeast flank runs along Saint-Furcy Street. The current entrance, visible from the Place de la Fontaine, allows to see the remains of the building, classified as historical monuments in 1982. Although partially destroyed, the church retains a strong heritage value, linked to its architecture and religious history. It illustrates the transformations suffered by the cultural buildings in Île-de-France, especially during revolutionary upheavals.

The church Saint-Furcy is today a monument shared between communal and private property. Its present state, limited to external elements, reflects the vicissitudes of its history, while offering an architectural testimony of the 15th and 16th centuries. Its classification in 1982 preserved these remains, which remain a point of historical and cultural interest for the city of Lagny-sur-Marne and its visitors.
