Origin and history

The church of Saint-Gall in Niedermorschwihr, classified as a historical monument in 1993, is distinguished by its bell tower of the 12th-XIIIth century and its twisted arrow, unique in Alsace. This bell tower, an ancient tower-chorus, preserves Romanesque and Gothic bays, murals, and a vault of warheads decorated with besants and florets. The nave and choir, rebuilt in 1805 by engineer Germain Michel Messier, replaced an older medieval structure, of which architectural traces such as a wall sink and a eucharistic niche remain.

The reconstruction of 1805, decided for economic reasons, simplified the original decor. The project was awarded in April 1805 and received in March 1807, incorporating stones from Pairis Abbey for bedside. The current sacristy dates back to 1873. A statue from the Virgin to the Child (15th century), formerly in the church, is now preserved at the Unterlinden Museum in Colmar. The adjoining cemetery, perhaps fortified, was moved in 1805, and the Saint-Michel chapel destroyed in 1793.

The building illustrates the Alsatian architectural evolution, mixing Romanesque heritage (geminated bays, archeries) and neo-classical transformations (Western gate of 1805). The arrow torch, absent from 17th century representations, bears witness to an undated later modification. The task marks and stuccos of the triumphal arch reflect the craft techniques of the 19th and 13th centuries. The organ of Andreas Silbermann, mentioned in a 2008 study, also highlights its musical heritage importance.
